The Café Museum has not much to do with a museum despite its name, though this Café is among the top ten most traditional, popular and elegant Cafés in the city center, Vienna’s splendid 1st district. So here at the Café Museum you can experience the flair, atmosphere and splendor of the old days of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire.
Every some weeks there are readings held of famous Austrian litereature by poets and writers in the Café Museum, for instance the famous Austrian writer Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach who lived in the old days of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. These readings are used to be free of entry and are very enjoyable to experience in this ambience reminding those wo expose themselves to of the times when Austria wa still an Empire ruled my the Emperor and its aristocracy.
That brings me to the stylish interior and ambience of the Café Museum, which is definitely not the most reasonable when it comes to the prices of the dishes and tarts but you get high quality for your money. You have a seat in one of the many niches of the Café and enjoy your dishes, coffees and desserts along with a large variety of daily newspapers to choose from.
The Café Museum is quite big in size with two wings and many niches and tables to choose from for having a good time relaxing on your own or with good company. The seating is comfortable to sit in since it is in sofa/couch style.
The waiters are friendly and used to tourists therefore they are able and willing to speak English with you.
I had the Leberknödelsuppe (liver dumpling soup) which is very popular in Austria. It was delicious. And my company had the delicious Gulaschsuppe (the Austrian variant of the more original Hungarian style goulash), though I have to mention that the Austrian version is more a thick soup and the Hungarian original is a thin soup you probably only get in Hungary but not in Austria.

The Bottom Line: The Café Museum, located in the Operngasse 7, in 1010 Vienna, is one of the top ten posh and traditional Cafés in Vienna’s city center, its splendid 1st district. This Café is ideal to experience the charms of the old days and poetry readings.
